The Roku patent is here
As revealed by the report resulting from the collaboration between @xleaks7 and Pigtou, here are the details of the patent published by Roku.
The company intends to introduce sensors within streaming devices and TVs capable of monitoring activities occurring in front of the screen.
According to the patent description, the system’s goal is not to invade user privacy but rather to optimize energy consumption.
In fact, thanks to Wi-Fi modules integrated into the devices, it will be possible to detect user movements. This way, the user experience can be improved, and the device can be dynamically adjusted.
When the streaming device or TV detects the presence of a user, the devices will switch from standby mode to active mode. The same will happen when the user moves away, causing the device to return to standby mode and thus optimize energy usage.
The Roku patent
The patent filed by Roku also describes how the detection works. Through one or more Wi-Fi modules, it will be possible to determine the user’s presence and movements. Additionally, the devices can be programmed to respond to specific actions or movements.
This technology could also be integrated for dynamic home automation management. Through IoT systems, smart home devices could be controlled to react to certain actions.
For example, simply leaving a room could turn off the TV or streaming device along with all the lights. It’s worth noting that this is still just a patent. It is not clear whether Roku will implement it in its devices or which device will be the first to feature this unique capability.
In any case, despite the many positive aspects of this patent, one must also consider the implications related to the nature of monitoring. There could be potential privacy concerns associated with the continuous analysis of habits and movements within the rooms of one’s home.
