Amazon Prime wants ads
The introduction of ads will begin in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Canada in early 2024, followed by France, Italy, Spain, Mexico, and Australia later in the same year.
Amazon has stated that, in order to continue investing in engaging content and support increased investments over time, starting in early 2024, Prime Video shows and movies will include limited advertisements. They also emphasized their intention to have significantly fewer ads compared to traditional television and other streaming TV providers.
Prime Video: new plans
Ads will be included in the standard offering, and subscribers will have the option to switch to a new ad-free plan for an additional cost of $2.99 per month in the United States. Prices for other countries will be announced later.
Amazon will actively communicate with Prime members via email several weeks before the introduction of ads on Prime Video, providing information on how to subscribe to the ad-free option if they prefer.
It is important to note that live events, such as sports — where Amazon already shows ads — will continue to include advertising in the premium version.
Amazon’s decision brings it closer to competing streaming platforms such as Netflix and Disney+, which already offer ad-supported tiers.
However, Amazon Prime Video stands out from other streaming services as it is included with Amazon Prime delivery service, which offers same-day or next-day shipping.
